Blotter Books
Blotter books are essentially book
covers lined with blotting paper. They were used as long as ink was in
liquid format. The principle of a blotter book is simple. You open the book,
place your paper on one side, and begin writing. When finished, close the book.
The blotting paper on the inside blots your work and dries your ink. There is a
story of a Continental Army capturing a British blotter book during the New York
campaign, and checking troop strength by holding a mirror to the paper, thus
deciphering the information written. We offer blotter books in two sizes, a
small one approximately 6 by 9 inches that will blot paper 8 by 5 inches, and a
larger one approximately 9 inches by 14 inches, large enough to blot an 8 1/2 by
11 sheet of paper all at once. Blotter books come with 10 sheets of
appropriately sized note paper. The books tie closed by means of tapes glued
into the books. The ties will hold your paper within while carrying the book.

New 18th century book:
The
Young Clerk's Assistant (BRW020) - George Bickham was one of the most
highly-regarded calligraphers of his day. He wrote two works on penmanship. One
was called The Universal Penman, which contained examples of business
forms of the day. The other was this booklet, which was a practical guide to
writing with a quill. We have reproduced it here in a facsimile format. $5.00.
